Frank Rustich

Football - Boxing

Frank Rustich is a legendary figure in San Diego Sports Officiating history.

Frank had a 50 plus year officiating career that included boxing, football, basketball and baseball.  He was a basketball referee in San Diego County for 50 years, and worked in the American Basketball League.  Rustich was a referee in old American Football League before the merger with the NFL.  In boxing Rustich refereed the Muhammed Ali vs. Ken Norton fight at the San Diego Sports Arena when Norton broke Ali’s jaw.

Frank and his towering influence on San Diego Sports Officiating is honored by the San Diego County Baseball Umpires Association’s Frank Rustich Rookie of the Year Award and San Diego County Basketball Officials Association’s Frank Rustich Rookie of the Year Award.
