John began his umpiring career in 1947 as a member of the Armed Forces Officials Assocation while serving in the U.S. Navy.
He has served on the Board of Directors, acted as the umpire in chief for numerous tournaments and league championships and had received every award given by the Assocation.
John retired from the U.S. Navy in 1971 after 30 years' service and from Civil Service in 1992 after 20 years of service.
