Mike Carey

Football

Mike Carey was born in San Diego, on August 17, 1949, he attended the University of San Diego High School, where he played Varsity Football and served as the Student Body President, graduating in 1967. He graduated from the University of Santa Clara with a BS, in Biology. He played four years of Varsity Football, as a running back, and was the Freshman Team MVP.

Mike began his Officiating career in the San Diego County Football Officials Association, in 1973; Back Judge in the Western Athletic Conference, National Football League, twenty-four years, the final nineteen as a Referee. First African American to Referee a Super Bowl. Mike’s game jersey

is enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame. From 2014 through 2016 CBS Broadcaster-Rules Analyst.

Boys & Girls Clubs of San Diego Board of Directors from 1993-2013, past Chairman of the Board of Snow Sports Industries of America’s, past member of the Board of Directors of the NFL Officials Association. Mike was appointed to the Santa Clara University Board of Trustees in 1995 and served as Chairman of the Student Life Committee. He previously served on the University’s Board of Regents. Inducted  into the San Diego County Officials Hall of Fame and the Boys & Girls Clubs National Hall of Fame, in 2008.  In 2008 he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Santa Clara University. Inducted into Santa Clara’s Hall of Fame in 2019. In 2016, he was the recipient of the SDCFOA’s most prestigious award, the George A. Schutte Memorial Award.

Mike is co-owner of privately held, Seirus Innovation Inc, manufacturer of cold-weather essentials. He lives in San Diego with his wife Wendy, they have two daughters Drisana Kole Carey and Danica Brooke Carey.
