Bruce began his officiating career in 1956, volunteering to officiate at various swim meets in San Diego.
He was an Amateur Athletics Union (AAU) official from 1956-1973. Bruce served as the first and only starter for the San Diego CIF Finals for the first twelve years of its competition.
His philosophy was, "See the call, make the call and get on with the meet."
It is estimated that he started and officiated over 80,000 races with athletes between the ages of 8-24 years old.
