Randy Hartman started his wrestling officiating career in 1980, after graduating from Oklahoma State University. He officiated the Oklahoma state high school wrestling tournament in 1985 before moving to California. He has refereed the California state high school wrestling tournament 14 times, and has been assigned a championship match each time. Randy is a past president of the Southern California Wrestling Officials Association and a member of the San Diego County Wrestling Officials Association. Randy also served on a committee formed in 2010 to evaluate potential college wrestling rules modifications and make recommendations, as appropriate, to the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee and the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Between 2005 and 2015, Randy focused on officiating at the college level. He has officiated over 25 college post-season tournaments, including the Big Ten tournament, the Big 12 tournament, the Pac 12 tournament, and the National Junior College championship. Randy has officiated some of the biggest college dual meets in the country, including the Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma bedlam dual, the Iowa vs. Minnesota border war, the National Duals, and the All-Star wrestling match. Randy officiated at the NCAA Division I national championships seven times. He was selected to referee five finals matches, indicative of being ranked as one of the top ten college wrestling officials in the United States. In 2018, Randy Hartman was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Randy Hartman is a retired civil engineer who worked on water and wastewater projects throughout his career. He is an adjunct professor at National University and teaches engineering and construction management classes. Randy is one of the top crossword puzzle constructors in the country. He has published six books, and over 1,700 of his puzzles have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and many other publications. Randy has been happily married to his wife Vicki for 46 years. They have two daughters and four grandchildren.
