Rusty Riner

Basketball

Rusty Riner was born in Oak Hill, West Virginia and moved to Oceanside, California in 1956. He attended San Clemente High School, Mira Costa College and Linfield College in Oregon.. He has a daughter, Jennifer, a granddaughter, Emily, and a son, John. He is currently married to his wife of three years, Sheila, and has a stepdaughter, Alissa.

Rusty’s officiating career started at Linfield College in Oregon in 1968, officiating intramural football. After leaving Linfield College and returning to Oceanside, he umpired softball for the City of Oceanside, then the ASA and the ISC (International Softball Congress). He also was a player in the ASA and the ISC, and was drafted in the first ever professional fast pitch league, although the

league never completed its first season. Rusty also umpired softball in the North County for 20 years.

Prior to joining North County Basketball Officials Association (NCBOA), Rusty worked with Margarita Officials Association at Camp Pendleton for his first two and a half years of officiating. During his tenure with NCBOA he has served as President seven times,Vice President once, and Member-at-Large twice. Rusty also held the position of Member-at-Large for the California Basketball Officials Association (CBOA). Throughout his 41 years as a basketball official, he has worked at every level from youth ball, adult recreation, high school, junior college, Division III, and international basketball. He has also officiated in championship games at every level in the CIF San Diego Section, one state CIF championship game, two Southern California CIF Regional championship games and one junior college tournament. In October of 2015, Rusty will begin his 39th year of officiating in the NCBOA.

Rusty retired from the Oceanside Unified School District in 2003 after serving the students and community for 28 years. He is now employed part time by the City of Temecula in the Community Services Department as Senior Recreation Leader.
