Steve Coover

Football

Steve Coover is a native San Diegan who began officiating in 1976, following in the footsteps of his father Chuck who also played and coached high school football in San Diego, and officiated in the San Diego County Football Officials Association (SDCFOA).

During Steve’s 32 years as an official, he served as a crew chief for 25 years and was assigned to over 20 CIF semifinal games and 6 CIF Championship games. Steve’s final game in uniform was in 2006 when he was assigned to the first California State Championship game.

In 2019 Steve began serving as the Instructional Chairman, and CIF Liaison for the SDCFOA.  He continues in that capacity today and is responsible for training and certifying all new and experienced officials in

San Diego County.  Steve also participated in 2 years of filming the Prep Pigskin Report segment, “It’s Your Call!” on local television. In 2014 Steve was selected to serve as the CIF Football Rules Interpreter for California. 

Steve is an observer for several west coast college football conferences and a scout for the National Football League officiating program.  He has been honored by the High School Sports Association of San Diego, The California Coaches Association, The National Football Foundation, and the San Diego CIF.  In 2012 he was awarded the George Schutte Memorial Award from the SDCFOA.
